Information
Background:
For the record, Masayuki is his first name, but he is more known by his last name, Hori. As such I will be using "Hori" throughout the application. The other characters will be first introduced by first name-last name order, but like Hori will be referred to by last name.

In terms of character background, there really isn't much to Hori. He comes from a high school "romcom" slice of life manga written in 4-koma form. It's really more comedy than romantic, though there are obvious pairs that are ship teased. The main characters are Chiyo Sakura and Umetaru Nozaki, the former having a one-sided crush on the other and the latter being a shoujo manga artists. The series follows the two as well as the other cast members: Mikoto Mikoshiba (nicknamed "Mikorin"), Yuzuki Seo, Hirotaka Wakamatsu, Masayuki Hori, and Yuu Kashima. All of the males help Nozaki with his manga, with Sakura being the only female. In terms of "plot," it's just basically episodes of their high school life in general with Nozaki's manga influence involved. He and Kashima are the "set pair" so most of his appearances are with her.

Hori is first introduced as a third year and is the director and president of the Roman School drama club. In fact his introduction is rather "explosive" as he comes charging in and slams his knee into Yuu Kashima, a second year student who is considered the school's prince and is often flocked by female students—despite being a female herself. But Kashima is also the lead actress and tends to skip out a lot, so Hori is always finding and dragging her back to club meetings and practices.

Hori wasn't always on backstage, managerial duty. He used to also be an actor and was considered a lead performer due to his exceptional talent. However, due to his short height he no longer quite fit the image. Since he was too good to be relegated to a side character, he took on directing and working with the backgrounds and found that he actually quite liked it. He still has his acting talent and Kashima is always eager to watch him. In fact, it was after watching one of his plays that Kashima decided to enter the high school. Upon meeting Kashima at the entrance ceremony, he immediately went to her and asked her to join the club to be the lead protagonist, which she (probably all too readily and carelessly) agreed to. At the time, however, he only really noticed her face and did not realize she was a girl. It was quite a while before he realized Kashima was a guy. But that did not change his opinion of her and he constantly compares any other "bishounen"/"ikemen" (pretty boys) against her. She always wins.

In addition to his activities with the drama club, Hori helps Nozaki as a the background artist. In return, Nozaki writes screenplays that has princes as the main character so that it could fit Kashima's role. He keeps this a secret, however, because his greatest fear is Kashima finding out and somehow butting her way in to "help." Except her help would cause unnecessary stress and chaos. While this is probably a great exaggeration, he does his best to keep it a secret. Unfortunately, Kashima finds a volume of Nozaki's work in his school bag (which he had thrown at her because she was skipping club), and began to believe that he wanted to be just like a shoujo heroine. Thus Hori now has to suffer her ridiculous antics at trying to treat him like a princess. This included leaving behind feminine clothing and actually taking his uniform. This leaves Hori exasperated—but he did find her ability to coordinate the outfit admirable.

Thus the only other people who know of his side job are Sakura and Wakamatsu. He met Sakura after Kashima recruited her to help with the stage backgrounds. Prior to that, they knew "of" each other in the sense that there was someone who did the backgrounds (Hori) and someone for the inking (Sakura). Hori would leave marks behind to indicate where to fill. They were usually cat faces, but at one point there was an image that looked a lot like a pair of briefs. It was only after Sakura saw the cat face on the backdrop she was assigned to that she made the connection. This was confirmed when she showed Hori the image of the briefs. (This also caused more misunderstanding from Kashima—it's a common trend.)

Wakamatsu was brought in after Nozaki fell sick and he, Sakura, and Wakamatsu answered his "SOS" text message with ink. Who knew the guy would actually be sick? (Clearly, none of them expected the otherwise normal reaction.) The three of them tried to help finish Nozaki's manuscript, but there was one task neither he nor Sakura knew how to do: screentone. Originally Wakamatsu had been drafted in by Nozaki for erasing, but he also showed talent in cutting and applying the screentones.

The last member of Nozaki's team is Mikoshiba, who adds the sparkling and flower effects. Hori knows Mikoshiba through Kashima, but not that he helps Nozaki. In turn, Mikoshiba doesn't know about Wakamatsu's or Hori's jobs. However, Hori does recognize that Mikoshiba was Nozaki's inspiration for his manga's heroine, Mamiko, and ever since he has a tendency to call Mikoshiba "Mami—koshiba."

Other than that, Hori leads a relatively normal life.

Personality:
Hori is a guy you could consider as the "straight man" of the crazy cast. Out of all of them, he is the most grounded and sensible. Not that the others lack common sense, but if we had to give a scale, Hori would have more of it. Of course he has his own strange quirks, which will be detailed shortly.

Although he used to be an actor, he is less of the "naturally charming" and "obnoxious" type. In fact it's quite the opposite and one might not have even guessed he used to act. He has a lot of passion for acting and takes it seriously like a professional. This sense of diligence and responsibility carries over to everything else he does. Be it working for Nozaki or simply studying, he never does anything halfhearted. Once assigned a task, he will carry it out to the best of his abilities. He can also improvise and ad lib pretty well, and no matter the role he can perform it with the credit it deserves. When inspiration strikes, he acts on it right on the spot, and this can break his otherwise casual, cool persona. He'll just glow like a light when he sees the perfect person for a role or scene. This also carries a over a little when he's later given a camera to take pictures of various background scenes. He can get caught up in the moment and forget where he is just so he can get that perfect shot.

His ability to stay relatively levelheaded and strong sense of responsibility gives him the necessary qualities to be a leader, and he's not hesitant to take such a position. He is also not above yelling and trying to get everyone back in line through brute force. He also has a natural commanding voice, capable of really driving his orders home. He can be quite frank and direct about it. But through his experience with the drama club and having to deal with people like Kashima (or rather, just Kashima), he is capable of handling whatever is thrown at him. Whether he can succeed or not is of course a question of reality, but he doesn't let setbacks really get to him. He can be strict, but only when he has to be or the time calls for it. Otherwise he is very encouraging and is willing to help if there are problems. Once someone meets that potential he lets them know with an approving smile. He also tries to put people where they are best situated for and in terms of acting, would give them the roles they would perform best in.

Speaking of acting and directing, rather than put on classics, he has Nozaki create scripts that would fit Kashima's princely image and would please the audience—in this case, high school students, and more to the point, high school female students. He likes seeing everyone enjoying the plays. For Hori, acting is not just about the act—it's about what the audience gets out of it. He's not about the "school" or "art" of the theatre but what the theatre can provide for others.

Despite his usually levelheaded self, Hori does have quite the temper and it can be quite explosive and violent. The physical abuse is only really ever seen toward Kashima. He'll punch, kick, throw, grab and spin, and hurl objects at her whenever he catches her skipping or fooling around when she shouldn't be. He also has quite the voice—well given his use of his diaphragm, that actually shouldn't be surprising. But if he sees someone fooling around when they shouldn't be, he will raise his voice and let his displeasure known. Whether he just gives a yell of, "Hey, get back to work!" or "Quit fooling around!" depends on the situation and the person. With friends, he definitely does not hold back, but it's likely more restrained if it was to strangers.

That isn't to say he's a stiff, either. He's a high school teenage boy. He can have fun and knows how to fool around. Just as long as it's not during a time where people should actually be working. But outside of his responsibilities with the drama club, he can be pretty relaxed and be "casual cool." He can appreciate the little things and just take it easy when he can. Hori has also proven himself to be something of a "prankster" in terms of messing with someone's head or teasing them. Well, at least to Kashima. He probably wouldn't approve if it was something more on the "mean" side, but if it's just to have a little fun with friends, he would be fine with it.

All in all, Hori is the older, responsible, mature type that is likely to end up something like a chaperone. He is type of guy who is sure of himself in the sense that he knows what he's doing. He doesn't do anything particularly special or tries to stand out, but he could be a pretty good role model. But most of all, he's still only seventeen, so he still has some of that "high school youth" in him.

Abilities:
Hori is really just your average teenager. No special powers, no special weapons, no special nothing. In terms of skills, there are three main things: acting, directing, and design/carpentry.

Although he is no longer active, Hori is also still a talented actor, able to get into his role no matter what it is. From star hero to a common servant maid, he will get into character and perform faithfully. He is also capable of ad lib and improvising on the spot. In terms of directing, he just has a natural commanding air to him that will make (most normal) people listen to him when directed. And finally, he's very good at drawing backgrounds and carpentry. It's not impossible to imagine him actually being decent with anything related to architecture and interior design. But he has good spatial sense and good with tools. Although he also paints and draws the backgrounds, that doesn't necessarily make him an artist. Buildings and structures are really the only things he could do, as well as some simple objects and landscapes if he has references.

Some of this is manga/anime physic gag, but Hori is apparently capable of throwing quite a lot of things, mostly at Kashima. He might not be part of any athletic clubs, but Hori is in shape and still strong. No frail actor here.

Other:
Just going to link this for some trivia reference.

Oh, and he's coming in with his school uniform and school bag. His cellphone and camera are also coming along (since they're both on him or in his bag).

He also likes girls who have a nice pair of legs. No, this is not important. Yes, it's kind of a joke.

Affection:
He's not the most touchy feely affectionate kind of guy. Brought up in Japanese culture and just his own personality. Bro fist bumps and slaps on the shoulder are probably the most he would do. As to stuff done to him HA HA HA GO FOR IT he'll be so awkward. Depending on who the person is and the situation, he'll either just take it, flail, or yell and call them an idiot.

Fighting:
Erm, he's not uh. Exactly built for fighting. He could handle himself in a normal teen brawl/wrestling but otherwise yeeeeeeah. So I'd actually prefer him not get into any fights.

Misc.:
Anything else is fine, just let me know ahead of time if it's something weird/really intrusive. I mean I don't mind, I just need to know so I can properly thread it out on my end :|b
